Sidney Mathews' British Empire Medal was listed in the London Gazette on 14th March 1944, and the details given there comprise the only known contemporary account of the rescue of Peter Hughes Mack from the burning wreck of K-King.

The details of what happened would have been noted down the same day, or very soon afterwards, by Mathew's commanding officer, and then forwarded on to the appropriate authority with a recommendation for the medal.

It is even possible that Bennett himself, who went to the scene of the crash, said Mathews' name should be put forward despite the fact that Sidney was breaking Standing Orders at the time.
